WorkSmart Education's commercial banking curriculum provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze, structure, price, and document a commercial lending proposal.

The courses use business cases to illustrate key lending concepts and provide opportunities to apply the content in a real-life lending situation.

Each course in this curriculum consists of one or more modules. Course participants can expect each module to require 60 to 75 minutes to complete.

The courses in this curriculum are currently available in English and Spanish, but we can make them available in any language that you require.

Why Businesses Borrow

Businesses Borrow

Why Businesses Borrow is an introductory course for entry-level bankers. This course introduces participants to the concepts of funding needs, funding sources, and how business owners choose different funding sources. It also covers the techniques banks use to reduce the risk of capital loss at both the individual loan level as well as at the portfolio level.

This course consists of three modules and an online assessment.

Assessing Business Risk

Businesses Risk

Assessing Business Risk analyzes the most common risks to a business' cash flow and value by segmenting a company into three components: outputs, inputs, and internal operations.
This course includes two business cases: one case demonstrates how to apply business risk analysis skills and the other case gives participants the opportunity to practice these skills.

This course consists of six modules, two case studies, and an online assessment.

Assessing Industry Risk

Industry Risk

In the Assessing Industry Risk course, participants learn how to use the value chain to analyze the critical capabilities of companies in an industry, the tools companies use to compete, and how to assess the state of competition in a market or industry. The risks and indicators of industry consolidation, as well as industry forecasting techniques, are also covered.

Managment

Evaluating Management explains the typical management structure for companies and examines the roles of a management team. This course instructs participants how to assess the need for strong management and provides a framework for lenders to assess a management team.

Loan Structuring & Pricing

Loan Pricing

Knowing how to structure and price a loan is an essential skill that all lenders must possess. The Loan Structuring & Pricing course uses a case study to educate participants on the process of structuring and pricing loans. Participants will learn the key elements of a loan structure, how each element protects the Bank's capital, and the basics of building a term sheet.

Building Financial Projections

Financial Projections

After completing the Building Financial Projections course, participants are able to build a dynamic financial model for a company based on its historical financial results and assumptions for future performance. This course also shows how to sensitize financial projections to test a loan structure in a number of different economic scenarios.

Mitigating Risk

The Mitigating Risk course teaches participants how to break risks down into component parts and look for characteristics of the business or its industry that mitigate the impact of these risks on a business' cash flow and value. Participants also learn how to build protective elements into the structure of a loan to reduce the risk of capital loss.

Loan Documentation

The effective use of loan documentation is an essential component of the commercial and corporate lending process. The highly technical nature of this discipline makes it difficult and time-consuming for bankers to achieve the necessary level of proficiency on their own. The Loan Documentation course provides entry-level employees in both common and civil law jurisdictions with a strong foundation of knowledge on the different types of loan documentation, the stages in the lending process where they are used, and the elements they must negotiate.
